Organization name Women Action Committee
Event Country Nigeria
Event Region Africa
Event Location Details Mbaukwu, Oyi Local Government Area in Anambra State
Date(s) 15 November
Description of Activities Sexual abuse is persistent, unwanted sexual advances, verbal abuse, and/or demands for sexual favours. Victims of sexual abuse suffer significant psychological effects, including anxiety, depression, headaches, sleep disorders, weight loss or gain, nausea, lowered self-esteem and sexual dysfunction. Overall, sexual harassment causes a tense and unproductive working and learning environment. As a result of the relatively poor attention to, and weak emphasis on sexuality, there have been increased cases of sexual abuse both the males and females in Anambra state. We intend, through advocacy efforts, to increase the awareness of parents, guardians, those of Junior to Senior Secondary school age, and other relevant stakeholders, on the active roles they need to play and the skills they need to acquire to grossly reduce the odds of minors’ sexual abuse, possibly even by trusted persons. We also seek, through our efforts, improved access to information, counseling and legal services for those within this age group in the event of violation by sex offenders/perpetrators.
